Florence spelling bee winners announced

The following news release provided by Florence School District One:

Florence School District One held its largest spelling bee this year with over 400 students from 11 Florence One elementary schools and the Palmetto Youth Academy participating in Round One of the competition. The top ten spellers from each school proceeded to Round Two, and 64 spellers competed in the final round.

With a vision to bring all elementary schools together, along with support from the community and local businesses, Behavioral Health Counselor Sam Fryer organized the event which is in its eighth year of existence. 

Emerging winners from the final round of the 2013 Spelling Bee are (pictured) Carver Elementary's Allie Meeker, (center) 1st place and  Joshua Williams (right) 2nd place; McLaurin  Elementary's Smith Porter (left)  3rd place.

Said Fryer, "Special thanks are extended to Carol Pinckney, Blazely Young, Valerie McElroy, Claudia Parfitt, Lionel Brown, David Copeland, Dottie O'Neil, school principals and to word-callers at each spelling event."
