HORRY COUNTY, SC (WMBF) – Gun manufacturer PTR Industries has begun hiring for their new facility at the Cool Springs Business Park in Aynor.
Horry County Councilman Bob Grabowski, now the purchasing manager for PTR Industries, says they are hiring 30 people by the end of February. There will be 10 hired in January, and the remaining 20 by the end of February.
Salary for the positions ranges from $13 to $25 an hour, Grabowski said. Some jobs will offer training, but more skilled positions will require previous experience. Among the available jobs listed are gunsmiths, machinists/assemblers, TIG welders, tool makers, metal finish technicians, CNC operators, and a custodian.
The facility is still under construction, but it is expected to be finished in December. PTR transferred 23 people from their Connecticut facility to work and train employees in Horry County, officials said.
PTR Industries announced that they would move their manufacturing facility from Connecticut to Horry County back in June. According to the company's website, the decision to relocate was made after Connecticut enacted gun control legislation in response to the shooting at Sandy Hook in Newtown.
By moving, PTR Industries owner Josh Fiorini said they would be doubling their rifle manufacturing capacity.
"This facility is on the western part of the county so fortunately we will be able to pick up some of the unemployment, in some of the surrounding counties," said Brad Lofton, Myrtle Beach Regional Development Corporation.
"There are a lot of people in Horry County that are not currently working that do have mechanical skills that it will take to do this job," said Bob Grabowski.
The MBREDC helped recruit PTR Industries and another gun manufacture, Ithaca Gun Company, to our area.
The MBREDC's President says, adding those companies is only going to strengthen the job sector and strengthen the job sector and the local economy.
"These two gun manufacturers have really helped to open up a lot of other doors for us. We are talking to some ammunition suppliers, we're talking to other gun manufacturers," said Lofton.
Officials said bringing those industries to Aynor will give the town its own niche.
"The Cool SpringBusiness Park has been out there for nearly ten years. And they have gone from having no industry at all to two of the premier gun manufactures in the countryside by side," said Lofton.
