MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (AP/WMBF) - Some organizations in South Carolina are promoting the awareness of transgender struggles and issues with a series of events across the state.

On Sunday, SC Equality is one of several groups helping put on a candlelight vigil in Myrtle Beach. A statewide vigil was held Saturday in Columbia, and two other events are planned in Greenville and Beaufort.

The vigils are part of International Transgender Awareness Day. Organizers say community leaders and public officials are scheduled to speak, and the names of transgender people affected by violence are being read aloud.

All events are free and open to the public.

The vigil will be held at 7 p.m. Sunday at Nance Plaza, 815 N. Kings Hwy, in Myrtle Beach.
