Registered sex offenders bringing down home values

Posted: Updated:
RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) -

A study at Longwood University found the number of sex offenders in an area can actually lower home prices significantly.

The Longwood study found that the presence of a registered sex offender within 0.1 mile of a home negatively impacted the home's selling price and it took about 80 percent longer to sell the house.

Richmond realtor David Johnson says crime rates and schools are still the biggest inquires but people are asking about registered sex offenders more often these days.

"With the internet presence that is out there now, and the information that's out there, I think more people are interested in it, and that's where they find the information from," said Johnson.
