It doesn't surprise me that a majority of you who voted have approved resolutions to tax yourself because you believe it will improve your community.
Voters in Florence passed a capital project sales tax referendum that is expected to generate $125 million for infrastructure improvements throughout the county. Myrtle Beach voters agreed to raise property taxes to pay for a performing arts center.
It might surprise people that voters in a Republican dominate state would vote to increase taxes. But that has been the trend with recent initiatives and I believe it is because people see the benefit locally. The money isn't going to Washington where people have no idea how it is used.
It would be nice if the state and federal governments could provide more help, but we know that won't happen. What we do know is if we want to improve our community, we have to pay for it ourselves.
