LAURINBURG, NC (WMBF) - A pregnant woman shot in the head in one of two shooting incidents in Laurinburg has died.
Police believe the fatal shooting was in retaliation for deadly gunfire the week before.
Laurinburg Police jailed 24-year-old Kamel Stewart in connection with the shooting death of 24-year-old Bryon Covington on October 30. At about 7 p.m. on Nov. 5, police responded to the area of Produce Market Road in Laurinburg to find a 19-year-old woman shot in the head. She was 12 weeks pregnant.
The woman was listed in critical condition, but later died from her injuries.
She was a passenger in a car that is owned by Calvin Stewart, the father of Kamel Stewart. Police determined the car, which was occupied by four people, was in an intersection on Wagram Street near Samoa Street, when several subjects appeared from the dark and fired shots at the vehicle, the report stated. One of these bullets struck the 19-year-old woman in the head.
As police were investigating this shooting, another shooting occurred at the 1100 block of Anne Street, the news release from Laurinburg Police stated. Police obtained information that 17-year-old Calvin D. Stewart, the brother of Kamel Stewart, started shooting at a subject he thought was involved in the earlier incident. The projectiles struck a house occupied by four people, including two young children. No one was injured in this incident, police stated.
Officers obtained warrants for Calvin D. Stewart's arrest for attempted murder, shooting into an occupied dwelling, and other charges.
Anyone with information about either shooting is asked to call the Laurinburg Police Dept. at 910-276-3211.
