What was initially believed to be an armed robbery and shooting involving former Gamecocks running back Kenny Miles is now a mystery.
According to Sheriff Leon Lott, the report that Miles gave to authorities Monday afternoon has proven to be untrue. Lott made the revelation during a news conference at sheriff's department headquarters Tuesday afternoon.
"The only thing that I can verify to you is that Kenny Miles has been shot," said Lott. "We do not have an armed robber running around in the Dutch Fork or St. Andrews area. His ring and his watch were not stolen yesterday."
Lott said his department's investigation along with some sort of confession from Miles proved the initial report of a robbery to be false.
"I'm not real happy with the resources and time that we spent on this case chasing false leads," said Lott. "We wasted a lot of time and manpower."
Lott said it's unclear who is responsible for the shooting, but he hopes to solve this case in the near future.
He offered no other details about the incident.
When asked if Miles has been charged with anything, Lott said "no." Lott would not comment on whether or not Miles was cooperating with investigators.
The incident happened around 1 p.m. Monday in a business park near the intersection of Kinley Road and Broad River Road, deputies said.
An incident report released Tuesday afternoon says Miles was lying in the doorway of his vehicle when a deputy arrived to 121 Centrum Drive.
Miles, according to the report, told the deputy he was driving his car when he was shot. He did not know who shot him, the report stated. He did say the person who shot him was a white man in his late 30s or early 40s and was wearing a long sleeve work shirt and khaki pants.
When asked if the man who shot him left on foot in or a vehicle, Miles said he believed the shooter ran into the woods near Kinley Road. Deputies then began to search the area for the alleged perpetrator.
Miles was taken by EMS to Palmetto Health Richland Hospital with a
gunshot wound to the upper body. Deputies said he was able to give them more information on the way to the hospital.
Initial reports from the sheriff's department indicated the shooting took place during a robbery. A spokesperson for the sheriff's department said the suspect tried to steal a team ring Miles was wearing during the incident.
South Carolina team physician Dr. Jeffrey Guy said Miles was shot in the forearm and sustained a soft tissue injury. Guy is currently treating Miles in this case. Miles was expected to be released from the hospital Tuesday.
Early reports from the Richland County Sheriff's Department indicated the ex-running back had life-threatening injuries.
Miles thanked those who have offered support and prayers via Twitter early Friday morning,
"So thankful for all the support and prayers sent my way," wrote Miles. "Ill [sic] be just fine people I promise, I'm blessed y'all have a great day.Love you all"
The Lawrenceville, Ga. native played in all 13 Gamecock football games in 2012. The tailback was third on the team with 359 rushing yards on 104 carries.
As a redshirt freshman in 2009, Miles led the team in rushing with 117 carries for 626 yards.
For his career, he rushed for 1,341 yards on 315 carries, including four 100-yard rushing games. Two of his five touchdowns came in the 2011 Capital One Bowl win over Nebraska.
He graduated in May with a degree in criminal justice.
In March, Miles took part in Washington Redskins rookie camp, but is not currently listed on the team's roster.
Miles graduated in May with a degree in criminal justice.
He has been working as a support clerk at the South Carolina Attorney General's Office since August. A spokesperson for the office said Miles works with community outreach and youth mentoring.
