Moped driver dies after hitting speed limit sign

MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WMBF) – A Lake City man is dead after his moped ran onto a curb and he was ejected into a road sign on Ocean Blvd. in Myrtle Beach on Saturday, according to Sergeant Allen with the Myrtle Beach Police Department.

Horry County Coroner Robert Edge identified the man as 30-year-old Willie Lee Anderson, Jr. Coroner Edge said Anderson was visiting Myrtle Beach with a friend for the weekend.

Police said nothing mechanical went wrong with the moped Anderson was on to cause the crash, which occurred around 4 p.m. Saturday.  Witnesses said it appeared that Anderson was looking at the ocean while driving, when his moped struck the curb. The moped continued on the curb for about 20 feet before it laid down to the right and Anderson was ejected, his head crashing into a speed limit sign.

He passed away at Grand Strand Regional Medical Center from head and neck injuries that resulted from the accident.
