MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WMBF) - The Myrtle Beach Area Chamber of Commerce is partnering with Brand USA to market the Grand Strand area to Japan and China.
Up until now, international marketing has been primarily targeted at Canada, but this new effort is one the chamber says makes dollars and sense.
"We couldn't spend our budget in every nation that we wanted to penetrate; however, with Brand USA we are able to leverage a limited investment for an increased return on investment through their resources," says Brad Dean, President of the Myrtle Beach Area Chamber of Commerce.
Dean says international tourists tend to spend two to three times what the typical domestic tourists spends. Data also shows travel from China to the US is growing by double digits every year. The Chamber would be competing with places like Las Vegas and New York for those tourists, but Dean feels the Grand Strand has what it takes to bring them here.
"For a traveler that's never been to America it would be wonderful to see places with great beaches, mini golf courses and tremendous shopping," says Dean.
These are all things that will soon be seen in ads in China and Japan through Brand USA. The Chamber says the partnership also expands opportunities for travel journalists to write about the area in Asian publications.
