HCPD teaches students Halloween safety all week

HORRY COUNTY, SC (WMBF) – In a few days, ghouls and goblins will be roaming the streets seeking treats from people they often don't know too well.  Normally, the focus is on parents knowing about safety concerns, but the Horry County Police Department says kids need to be in on the conversation, too.

Parents can't always be at their children's side, and officers want to make sure kids know the safest way to go door-to-door looking for candy.

Beginning Monday morning, HCPD Lance Corporal Felix Cruz will travel to different elementary schools to teach students about Halloween safety. The class will show kids what things can be a concern while they're trick-or-treating Thursday night, like how to identify something suspicious, when to call police, and also when not to eat the candy they're given.  From the police perspective, these are tips every child should know.

"The kids can learn a lot of things," said Cruz. "And my whole concern is making sure they know all the safety concerns in regard to Halloween safety."

The first class starts at 7:45 a.m. Monday morning at St. James Elementary School. There will also be classes at Lakewood Elementary Wednesday morning. Cruz says it's important for all parents to tell their kids about these safety tips at home.
