Waccamaw Area Heart Walk raises more than $160k

The total is in. Walkers and runners raised more than $160,000 for the American Heart Association during the Waccamaw Area Heart Walk.

The 20th annual Waccamaw Area Heart Walk brought groups, teams, and individuals out for a three mile walk around grand park in market common.

The walk was to jump start their commitment to a healthy lifestyle while raising money and awareness for those with heart disease in our area.

Erin Cast, an American Heart Association supporter, said, "It really makes you reevaluate your life and realize what comes first: your children, your family and your faith to get you through something like this. Without the American Heart Association and the research, she wouldn't have stood a chance. They wouldn't have known that she had the heart defect; the surgeons wouldn't have been able to prepare or research the type of repairs they have to do on all of the technology and all the knowledge. So the Heart Association is a lifesaver for Peyton and all the babies out there with heart disease."

All proceeds from the walk will be used to research heart disease. WMBF News was an official sponsor for the event, which was emceed by Anchor Michael Maely.
