Conway High School musical genius makes this week's Student Spotlight

CONWAY, SC (WMBF) - When WMBF News's Theo Hayes met seventeen-year-old Damian Hoffman for this week's Student Spotlight, he serenaded the camera with an original piece he composed on the guitar. Hoffman plays nearly one dozen instruments including guitar, drums, piano, tuba, french horn and more. He has also written around a dozen songs.

"Music is the one thing I can express all my emotions through," says Hoffman. "When I play music, I transfer that through my hands."

The high school senior has been playing instruments since he was five years old. He started on the drums and the rest came naturally. He hopes his gift will take him through college and into a career in music.

"When I get out of here I plan to do a double major in either Engineering and Music and possibly combine them and do something such as recording or producing music," he said.

When Hoffman isn't making music, he says you can catch him skateboarding, playing soccer, maintaining a 4.0 GPA, working a weekend job and making his peers at Conway High School laugh.

"My nickname is Mufasa," he laughed. "They love my hair; I love being outgoing; don't hold grudges...I love everybody and I consider myself a comedic genius but others just call me corny."

Whatever you call it, you can't deny his musical talent has set him on a path toward a bright future.
