I had the opportunity to spend a day as a substitute principal at Burgess Elementary School. I wasn't really in charge, merely following along to see how Principal Donna Hooks managed her day.
When I was asked to participate in this project I wasn't sure if I wanted to get behind in my real job by spending a day with someone else on their job. But after I thought more about it, I realized it should be a very interesting adventure. Plus, I have two children in Horry County Public Schools so I am personally connected.
It was amazing. Principal Hooks and her staff are an impressive bunch; the operation runs like a fine-tuned machine. We dealt with everything from a sick child to scheduling and budgeting. I quickly realized that managing a school was very similar to managing a business. I had never thought of it that way.
I've always had an appreciation for teachers, but my appreciation has grown significantly. To all of our educators, thank you for all that you do for our kids and for your commitment to making our communities better places to live.
