COLUMBIA, SC (WIS) -

A missing 10-month-old boy was returned to his mother hours after he and his father went missing, authorities said Saturday.

Authorities said the boy was returned by a family friend and appeared to be in good health.

The Richland County Sheriff's Department made contact with 26-year-old Mark Barnes II on Monday and reported he is "safe and where he wanted to be." Deputies did not release Barnes' whereabouts.

The two went missing last Thursday evening in the Forest Acres area.

Sheriff Leon Lott said around 7:30 p.m. Barnes sent his fiancée a message saying he and the couple's biological son, Mark Barnes III, were on their way home from downtown Columbia.

When she arrived at her home in Hopkins around 8:30 p.m., Mark and her son were missing, Lott said.

Lott said Barnes suffers from serious a medical condition that placed him at risk.
