Darlington Co. teacher arrested for larceny

Posted: Updated:

DARLINGTON COUNTY, SC (WMBF) - A teacher at the Thornwell School for the Arts was arrested for petit larceny on school grounds after police caught her in the act.

According to a report from Hartsville Police, 28-year-old Sutton Marie Kinsley was suspected of stealing from her coworkers after cash started disappearing from purses and classrooms when she was around.

At least three employees had reported their money was unaccounted for, one of which stated the money had disappeared from a purse in a locked cabinet in their classroom. Though some suspected Ms. Kinsley was involved, police did not yet have a reason to arrest her.

That's when police created a trap to find out who was responsible. They marked two bills belonging to the school's PTO with blue ink. When the money went missing later that day, Ms. Kinsley was questioned and they found the marked bills in her pocket.

Kinsley was arrested on October 4 and charged with petit larceny. She has received bond and been released from the Darlington County Detention Center.

The Darlington County School District released the following statement about the arrest on the afternoon on Oct. 4:

This afternoon a teacher from Thornwell School for the Arts was arrested by an officer of the Hartsville Police Department and charged with petty larceny. The teacher has been placed on administrative leave, pending the outcome of an investigation. The school district will continue to cooperate fully with the police during their inquiry. Because there is an ongoing investigation, the school district is not able to comment further on the matter.
