Road to be renamed in honor of late war hero Gen. Vaught

CONWAY, SC (WMBF) – The Horry County Council voted Tuesday in favor of renaming International Drive after a retired, decorated war hero who died late last month.

The resolution would rename International Drive the "Lt. Gen. James B. Vaught Memorial Highway." Gen. Vaught was found dead in a pond on September 20, where he is believed to have drowned.

"General Vaught, he would never tell you this himself, but everybody who knew military history would tell you he's probably the most highly decorated, highest-ranking Horry County native in history," remarked  Retired Military Officer Harry Dubose. General Vaught was believed to be a direct descendent of Francis "Swamp Fox" Marion.

The general owned property within the Lewis Ocean Bay Heritage Preserve near International Drive before selling it to the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources, confirmed Horry County spokesperson Lisa Bourcier.  He was an advocate of extending the road from Carolina Forest to SC 90, east of Conway.

Paving and widening International Drive between Highway 90 and River Oaks Drive is one of the projects in the county's "Riding on Penny" referendum, and is slated to begin construction in late 2014.
