Federal government shutdown impacts DHEC's WIC program

SOUTH CAROLINA (WMBF) - The South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control has received information from the federal government about how the government shutdown will affect programs in the Palmetto State.

The United States Department of Agriculture is considering the Women, Infant and Children program as "non-essential" during the government shutdown, and it will not receive any federal funding. However, DHEC has identified reserve funding to continue processing WIC vouchers.

Services will be interrupted, and reimbursements will be discontinued on October 15 unless the USDA can release federal funds at that point, but for now WIC clients should continue using their vouchers as usual.

The agency is monitoring the WIC program's available funding and will provide you with updates as new information becomes available.
