Changes coming to Mega Millions lottery game

Below is a news release from the South Carolina Education Lottery:

COLUMBIA, SC (October 1, 2013) – Change is coming to the Mega Millions® game in a move anticipated to grow jackpots faster and create chances for more multi-millionaires.

You'll recall Powerball® made similar claims in 2012 and has since delivered three larger-than-life jackpots and a record number of millionaires this year.

Mega Millions® is hoping for similar results starting Saturday, October 19.

While it's too early to say what these changes will mean for ticket sales, the South Carolina Education Lottery is optimistic. "Lottery players have been spoiled by a rash of record-breaking jackpots," said Lottery Executive Director Paula Harper Bethea.  "Mega Millions® saw where change was necessary to keep pace and attract players back to its exciting brand, and we feel that will be the case in South Carolina."

Great news for players, the ticket price will remain $1.

Mega Millions® did up the odds of winning its jackpot from 1 in 176 million to 1 in 259 million.

Odds aside, dollar for dollar Mega Millions® is still the better deal, since you can buy two Mega Millions® tickets for the cost of one $2 Powerball® ticket.

Soon your dollar will buy a starting jackpot of $15 million (up from $12 million) guaranteed to roll by at least $5 million when it's not won.

Those lucky enough to match five white balls will win $1 million, up from $250,000.  Odds of doing so are 1 in 18.4 million.  Players who spend the extra dollar to purchase Megaplier® could win up to $5 million, $3 million more than is possible with Powerball®, thanks to a "5" multiplier being added to the mix.

There will be more white ball numbers to choose from, 75 instead of 56, and fewer Megaball® choices, 15 down from 46.  The Megaball® will be easier to match than the red Powerball®.

Your chance to win any prize is better with Mega Millions® overall odds at 1 in 15.

"There are advantages," said Bethea.  "We feel our players will recognize that and for $1 give Mega Millions® a try."
