Guns, alcohol stolen during home burglary

MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WMBF) – A man returned home from work Saturday to find his home broken into, and ransacked. Now, neighbors are worried about one stolen item getting into the wrong hands.

A Myrtle Beach Police report details the damage done to a home in the Sterling Village Community on Saturday night.

The report shows around 11 p.m., police responded to the area off of 13th Ave South for a burglary. The man living there was coming home from work and first noticed something was wrong as he was unlocking the door.

According to the report, a fan had been knocked over and the man noticed several of his fishing rods missing from his living room.

To police, it looks like someone sliced open the screen window next to the back door to get inside.

Once inside, police walked through the house, noting that many rooms were ransacked.

Items stolen included fishing equipment estimated to be worth around $1,500, alcohol, and bank cards. However, it is the shotgun and pellet gun worrying neighbors. Now that they're stolen, they could be anywhere on the street, in a stranger's hands.

The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms says any federal firearms licensee who has knowledge of the theft or loss of any firearms from their inventory must report such theft or loss within 48 hours of discovery to ATF and local law enforcement.

Upon discovery of any theft or loss of any of your firearms, the ATF says:

1. First, call your local law enforcement agency to report the theft or loss. Contacting the local law enforcement authorities is essential to the quick recovery of firearms taken in a crime. If the firearms are unaccounted for during inventory, you should make it clear to the authorities that there is no evidence of a crime and that the disposition of these firearms is unknown and may stem from a record keeping error.

 2. Second, call the ATF's Stolen Firearms Program Manager toll free at 1-888-930-9275. They can also assist in the preparation of the Theft / Loss Report for submission. ATF will work with the local law enforcement authorities investigating the theft.

3.  Third, complete the report form ( ATF Form 3310.11) and attach any continuation sheets necessary ( ATF Form 3310.11A) and mail it to ATF's National Tracing Center. Be sure to submit the original form(s) to ATF) and retain copies for your records.

4. Fourth, complete the report form (ATF Form 3310.6) (INTERSTATE) for firearms missing in shipment; reports can be taken by either party, the Shipper, Consignee/Receiver or the Carrier.

If you are to have a similar situation, immediately notify local law enforcement. For more information on the ATF, visit http://www.atf.gov/firearms/how-to/report-theft-loss.html.
