Athlete of the Week: Eri'reon Hayes, Dillon Wildcats

DILLON - The Dillon Wildcats are winning again this year - but such has become the norm for this program. However, a junior talent is taking much of the spotlight after having burst on the scene as the Wildcats approach the midway point.

"You can tell we have a good connection off the field," explains quarterback Malique Gregory. "He'll go and get it too. I'll just have to put it in his area, and he'll go get it."

Eri'reon Hayes has quickly emerged as a go-to target through the air for his team. Through four games this season, the numbers speak for themselves - 261 yards, averaging better than 65 each time out, and with six touchdowns, more than half of his catches have resulted in scores. But the results have come through simple preparation.

"Learned a lot of plays last year," he said.

Gregory taking over the quarterbacking spot over the last few matchups has helped both of them progress their games.

"He's one great athlete," Hayes said of Gregory. "He gets the ball to me, and the other receivers too, very often."

A quiet leader, he's just looking to lead other Wildcats by example.

"We ask him to do a lot of things," explained head coach Jackie Hayes. "We ask him to play on both sides of the ball."

And while the team has seen plenty of success this year, the bigger goals always remain the same for Hayes and everyone else.

"Win the state championship, and not lose anymore games," Eri'reon said.

The Wildcats take on Marlboro County in our Week Five Grand Strand Nissan Game of the Week.
