Road projects come alive in Florence County

Posted: Updated:

FLORENCE, SC (WMBF) - Unfinished road projects in Florence County are soon to see work crews, the Army Corps of Engineers gave the go ahead to finish those projects. All of those road updates are being funded in part by the current Penny Sales Tax.

"It's going to be great for business in the long run because it will help more traffic come through here," said Rebecca Holland.

Holland owns a business inside of the flea market on 378, one of the roads slated to see updates.

"These are major road building projects. There are bridges that have to be built; it is widening 378 to a four lane highway," said Florence County Chairman, James Schofield.

TV Road, Alligator Road, Pamplico Highway and Highways 378 and 76 are all on the list to undergo major construction.

"The agreements with the corps of engineers have been reached," said Schofield.

Over the next couple of months bids will be taken for three of the projects.

"The South Carolina Transportation has set bids for the 378 widening for October, bids for Timmonsville in November and T-V road widening in December," said Schofield.

This means come spring 2014 you'll see major construction on several major road in Florence County. One man said he was a little upset that some of his property would be used, when crews role in to widen 378.

Florence County Chairman James Schofield did add that to complete Alligator Road an additional 70 million dollars is needed, and other sources of funding are currently being considered.
