Saying goodbye to Sam from Sam's Corner

Posted: Updated:

MURRELLS INLET, SC (WMBF) – Walking into Sam's Corner in Garden City not much has changed, except for the lilies now gracing the seat where longtime owner Sam Baker used to sit.

"It's going to be a change not seeing him sit in that chair," explains Tommy Phipps, who has worked at the restaurant since 1977.

Baker, 62, died on Friday at the Medical University of South Carolina. According to Baker's son Jacob, his father was in the hospital for about five to six weeks prior to his death. He said he had complications due to his diabetes.

Stewart Yeany joined his wife in a booth at Sam's Corner on Monday morning. He's been coming to Sam's Corner for years when he visits Garden City from Maryland. "Kudos to Sam. A nice legacy of a good time to leave around."

Phipps said getting back to work on Monday he is thinking about his owner and friend. "A lot of people don't know he was a kind hearted man, really giving. He loved his customers and seeing them come in and walk out with a smile on their faces."

Baker was a 1973 University of South Carolina graduate, and avid Gamecocks fan. He opened the original Sam's Corner in Garden City in 1976. He was a devoted father, loved country music and traveling according to his obituary.

Monday at 3:00 p.m., all three locations of Sam's Corner closed for employees to properly mourn the loss of Sam. They will open back up Wednesday at 7:00 a.m.

Sam's Corner is a family business. Sam's brother is his business partner. His son and nephew also help to run the restaurant. According to Phipps, they aren't looking to change anything about the restaurants after Sam's death.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Sam Baker USC Memorial Scholarship Fund at PO Box 348, Murrells Inlet, SC 29576. Baker's family will receive friends from 6 p.m. through 8 p.m. on Monday, September 23 at Goldfinch Funeral Home Beach Chapel.
