SURFSIDE BEACH, SC (WMBF) - Around 50 or so officers from Horry and Georgetown Counties stopped cars along Glenns Bay Road near the intersection of Highway 17 Friday evening in Surfside Beach.

The Surfside Beach Police Department hosted this month's 15th Circuit Law Enforcement Network's check. The checkpoint began around 8:00p.m. and ended around 11:00p.m.

Surfside Beach Police Chief Rodney Keziah said 50 citations were written, eight arrests were made- three of those were DUI arrests. Keziah said four people were charged with minor in possession of alcohol, seven illegal drug charges were made, one fugitive from justice was caught and one person was who is considered a burglary suspect was put in custody.

Officers said the checkpoints are typically conducted in the early to late evening hours because officers want to reach as many driver's as possible, to ensure driver's are safe on the roads. Officers say the point of the checks are to show the community the police departments care about the residents safety.

During the monthly checkpoints, authorities are searching for folks who are breaking the law. The violations typically include everything from driving drunk to license issues. Last year when Surfside Beach hosted the check, the department seized three hits of heroin, one gram of crack cocaine, 15 grams of marijuana and $1,000 in cash.

By law, authorities are required to disclose checkpoint locations.
