MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WMBF) – With the new school year now in full swing, it's time to start honoring the teachers making a difference for our kids with the Golden Apple Award.
The first Golden Apple of the year goes to Alisha Custer, an experienced third grade teacher at North Myrtle Beach Elementary. When asked why the staff decided to nominate her, the adjective just kept rolling!
Her fellow staff members say she's patient, encouraging, understanding, and works well with her children.
When WMBF News crews surprised Custer with the award Thursday morning, she was going over a lesson with her class of 23 students, who started cheering for her.
Here's what she had to say: "I've been teaching 38 years, I was motivated by a teacher when I was young. And I'm very touched. Obviously I'm doing something right!"
This year, we are highlighting deserving teachers once a month, but we can't do it without those nominations.

Remember that we like to surprise the teacher with the award, so make sure you keep it a secret!
