Athlete of the Week: Josh Roper, St. James

MURRELLS INLET - Josh Roper is no stranger to lining up under center for the Sharks. Just beginning his senior season, it is his third year starting at the quarterback spot - and the progress has been tremendous.

"Sophomore year I kind of got thrown into it," Roper explained. "I didn't make good decisions. Last year during the fourth quarter is when I made most of my mistakes. This year I've learned when to throw the ball, when to tuck and run and play another down."

Despite an 0-3 start to the season, the expectations are still high in Shark country, and with improvements shown since Week Zero, he and the team still think they can achieve history with winning six games.

"It would be our first time that St. James has a winning season, and that's our goal this year (to win six games)," he said.

Though the task for Friday isn't easy either. Head coach Mark Fischer and the team take to the road to visit a Cross team that is never an easy out.

"I know they won the state title last year," he said. "They had a lot of great players. We had some success against them last year, but we fell in the fourth quarter. This year we're more prepared and as you can see our defense played a lot better."

Life after football looks promising for this 3.5 GPA student-athlete who is hoping to protect and serve in the future.

"I want to go into law enforcement and study criminal justice, anything like that," he said, wanting to make it a family affair. "It would be great to follow in my dad's footsteps."
