Carolina Forest Boulevard turn lane project delayed

CAROLINA FOREST (WMBF) -  Horry County Spokeswoman Lisa Bourcier says the project that would add three new turn lanes to Carolina Forest Boulevard has been delayed until late Spring 2014/early Summer 2014.

Bourcier said the funds to add the turn lanes to the Southgate, Avalon and Carolina Forest Rec Center intersections are set aside. However, the project won't begin until next year because there is also a resurfacing project in the works for Carolina Forest Boulevard.

"Earlier this year, we pushed back the schedule for the turn lane projects approximately nine months so they would coincide with the planned resurfacing of the remaining two-lane section of Carolina Forest Blvd (generally between River Oaks Drive and the EMS / Fire Rescue Station near Covington Lakes)," Bourcier said via email.

"As always, the county is doing more with less by stretching our scarce funds through logical coordination and implementation of this work," Bourcier said.

"Total construction costs would be greater if the original sections of pavement within the widened sections of roadway need to be resurfaced twice within a relatively short period of time if this work is not coordinate," Bourcier said.

This project was initially supposed to begin Spring 2012. Last summer, Andrew Markunas with Horry County Engineering told WMBF News one of the main reasons the project had been delayed was to keep from interfering with school traffic. But another reason was the heavy workload engineers were experiencing at the time.
