NORTH MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WMBF) - Developers are now working with the City of North Myrtle Beach to fast track the development plans for the former Robbers Roost Golf Course.
There is a special-called city council meeting Wednesday to go over some of the last and final details of the new "Coastal North Town Center." There has been a big traffic discussion on how drivers will be able to enter and exit the center.
The original plans called for a new stop light on Highway 17 Business for drivers to turn in, and then a roundabout to take them further inside the development. But SCDOT says because of the amount of expected traffic in the area, it might just cause backups on the highway. So officials scratched that plan and now there will be just a stop light on Highway 17 Business and stop signs once drivers enter.
This project has been put on hold for a few years, and those involved are updating the plans to bring it up to date. Developers and city leaders say they are finally in a position to push it
"Now developers are stepping in and taking up the slack on those projects," said North Myrtle Beach Planning Director James Wood. "So the economy is improving. I think it's a great sign. It's wonderful to see activity on the site again."
Although there have been rumors, developers are tight-lipped about what exactly has been confirmed to set up in the area. They tell WMBF News the latest plans are for 10 new restaurants, a grocery
store and 300 thousand square feet of retail space.
Attractions North Myrtle Beach residents like Bud Lyon says the north end needs.
"Everything else is so far down the beach," said Lyon. "We don't have a mall like they do in Myrtle Beach with upper stores."
The City of North Myrtle Beach has been pushing new developments recently, like the sports park, but Lyon feels this is something everyone will be able to enjoy.
"We're an older community we need a little more interest for the older folks," said Lyon. "We don't play baseball or run around and play tennis. And I think that's been ignored for the older people."
After Wednesday's special called city council meeting at 1:30 p.m., then there will be a final vote at the next city council meeting on the 25th. Developers want to close on the property by the end of September. Then developers plan to break ground in October, and then open up the development in October 2014.
