Korean War veteran buried in Florence

FLORENCE, SC (WMBF) - A lot of the men and woman who fought for our country often have  a tough time getting benefits through the Veterans Association, not because they don't deserve them; they have problems with all the paperwork involved.

"Hard, very hard, stressful, but we got it done," said Jessica Richardson.

Jessica Richardson and her family are among the thousands of families-that find themselves up against the wall when applying for benefits they're counting on for the VA.

"A disconnect where no one understands what's going on," said Jennifer Richardson.

Richardson and her family were finally able to bury her grandfather Monday, after postponing the funeral for one week while trying to get government promised funds to cover the cost of the funeral.

Her grandfather was 82-year-old Cesar E. Starnes Jr. He served as a radar technician during the Korean War and died in a Darlington nursing home. His 81-year-old wife was unable to attend his funeral services due to her dementia.

Sergeant Major Rick Walden see's this scenario on a daily basis.

"Sometimes paper work is misfiled; typically it happens with the military or the hospital where the veteran may have been treated," said Sergeant Walden.

Walden adds it's not always the fault of government agencies that many of our vets don't get their benefits. A lot of times the wring paperwork is filed or filled out incorrectly.

"The way it gets construed is when the veteran submits his claim depending on the medical evidence he provides to submit his claim."

Walden works with the Veterans Benefit foundation.

The non-profit helps Veterans and their family members get their benefits, by helping them fill out and complete claim forms, it also provides loans for military service members.

"The VBF is a501C3 organization they charge the veterans nothing for their services, which is just commendable," said Sergeant Walden.

But, the VBF also helps families like Jessica Richardson's financially when those benefits are needed quickly.

"I would like to thank VBF for and Icon Financial for stepping up in our time of bereavement,"said Richardson.

The VBF not only provides financial assistance while the veteran or family members wait for their claims to be processed, the organization helps veterans figure out what's stopping them from getting their benefits.
