Details released on Florence's new medical school

FLORENCE, SC (WMBF) - The plan is to make the building that will house the Francis Marion University Health and Sciences building three stories tall and similar in appearance to a federal building.

Senator Hugh Leatherman announced he, along with other Florence leaders, secured $5 million from the state to help build the school.

Once up and running the building will house three nursing programs. The hope is for the school to become the medical hub in South Carolina for students in their third and fourth years of education. City and state leaders say building the med school in downtown Florence means more jobs and development for the area.

"I'm proud and thrilled that the group has settled on this site, and I'm excited to see the impact these young people are going to have downtown. I can tell you there is a lot of excitement from developers who are looking to put apartments and everything else around it. It's going to have a fantastic impact," said Florence Mayor Stephen Wukela.

Last week, the city leaders said they could use eminent domain to get all the property needed to build the school. Today those leaders said an appraisal of that property was completed last Friday, so that the city can negotiate with those owners.
