Radio Drive sees big business boom

Posted: Updated:

FLORENCE, SC (WMBF) More businesses along with a new shopping mall are being built along Radio Drive.

"The impact with the accommodations tax and the hospitality fee, it's going to be enormous it's going to help the property owners in the City of Florence." said Florence City Councilman Buddy Brand.

"We're excited to know that Academy Sports is breaking ground, really breaking ground. And they will be bringing a lot of traffic through to this area," Holly Beaumier said.

And that's not the only construction site in the Radio Drive area. Just behind the Florence Civic Center there are two more hotels going up, Home2Suites and another Extended Stay Hotel. Those developments area just a few of more than 20 soon to come into the area, the old Pepsi site is where crews are clearing and digging to make way for that new shopping plaza.

"There will be an outdoors type shop and as that develops it will continue around the corner," said Brand.

Florence City Councilman Buddy Brand says the Civic Center and Magnolia Mall have attracted so much attention, that Florence's hospitality district along Radio Drive is being forced outward. All that growth has called even more attention to the need to more pedestrian safety in the area.

Right now, there are no sidewalks or safeways for pedestrians to cross Radio Drive, but there are currently plans on the table to add them.

"Walk ways trees benches that kind of thing, and that's being looked at right as we speak," said Brand.

More of those plans could include an overhead pedestrian bridge or possibly a tour bus that would drive people from one side of Radio Drive to the other. None of those plans are concrete yet, because the city and Civic Center management are looking into all possibilities to pick the one that will work best for the area.
