Athlete of the Week: Da'Quan Casey, Hemingway

HEMINGWAY - Da'Quan Casey's time with Hemingway has certainly involved plenty of variety. He is familiar with beginning the season fast, but intends to make 2013 different.

"We started off 2-0 last year and we ended 6-6," he explained. "That's one thing I don't want to happen this year, I just want to keep that momentum going, which we weren't able to do last season."

Averaging more than 100 yards per game and three touchdowns so far isn't coming as a surprise though, thanks to a change in his preparation for his seniors season.

"I hit the weight room a lot much more than I did last year, and I jogged ten miles a day," Casey continued. "I ate right, I just had a positive mindset, you know."

The motivation for that mindset is simple.

"(I want to get to) state," he said. "I've been there once, I want to be there again, I want one. I had a chance to get one ring, and I couldn't get it."

Casey refers to 2011, when the Tigers made it to the state title game, but fell one win short of a crown. Now he hopes to lead this team with every intention of giving this season a special result.

"He is a big help," said fellow Tiger Chris Thomas. "I've got to play with him for probably a year and a half now. He's a good running back. I like him."

And Casey and the rest of the Tigers get a chance to prove themselves on Friday with a showdown against the defending class A champion Cross Trojans.
