Growing concerns over one of Grand Strand's most dangerous intersections

HORRY COUNTY, SC (WMBF) - There is growing concern from some drivers about what some call the most dangerous intersection in the area where Palmetto Pointe Blvd. meets the 17 Bypass.

"I pass through it maybe a half a dozen times a day," said Eve Williams who works at an auto shop near the intersection. "It's never easy driving through it it's always difficult."

Williams is just one of several drivers who said what makes the intersection a problem is how wide it is because that leads drivers turning left from the bypass to pull out and wait in the middle of the intersection before they turn.

Laurie Doss said every afternoon she can see accidents and near misses from inside her restaurant that sits just feet from the intersection.

"It's pretty much pandemonium a lot of times especially certain times of the day we've seen several accidents," added Doss.

One thing many drivers told WMBF News that could help make the intersection safer is adding red turn arrow signals to the lights in an effort to keep drivers from idling in the middle of the intersection.

"If people would take their time and follow the green arrows instead of pulling out in the intersection trying to beat the light it's a lot better," said Doss.

SCDOT has planned to add an extra left turn lane for drivers using Palmetto Pointe Blvd to get on the bypass heading north.
