MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WMBF) – A family vacationing in Myrtle Beach claims that suspects posing as hotel guests were able to get a key from the front desk, get into their room, and steal their stuff.
With the beach right across the street, employees at the Wave Rider Resort say every day, at least one person asks for an extra key to their room, claiming to have left it inside while soaking up the sun.
But after this alleged burglary, the hotel is cracking down, and changing their policy so no one can get access to the rooms without proper identification.
In surveillance video from the hotel from Friday, September 6, a woman talking to the front desk manager at the Wave Rider told the front desk clerk she had been locked out of her room. He says he couldn't help her, but she continued pleading with him, and the property manager says she got her way by pulling the manager's heart strings.
"I had no reason to believe there was anything fishy, she even stood in line with 3 cameras pointing at her, and those cameras also caught her using the key to enter a room that wasn't hers," said Greg Williams, Wave Rider property manager.
"When we reviewed surveillance tapes, we also saw a lot of other footage with other people in it, put two and two together, and figured out what they were doing," said Josh Andrews with Wave Rider maintenance.
One of the victims staying in the room claims the suspect stole hundreds of dollars and a handgun. The hotel believes a man was working with her, perhaps acting as a lookout.
After hearing of similar cases at other hotels, employees decided to hit the streets, looking for those responsible.
"I took a picture of him off of the surveillance cameras to my phone and just went around, showing their faces, and people began to recognize them," Andrews said.
Two days into his search, Andrews says he "got a good lead, got a good tip, and we winded up catching them." He says he caught the two suspects just down the street from the hotel – drinking in an alleyway behind a beach store.
The hotel says police didn't have enough evidence to hold them. They hope by giving extra video, the suspects will end up behind bars.
