Voters now required to have photo ID

HORRY COUNTY, SC (WMBF) – From now on, all voting in person will require a photo identification before an individual is permitted to cast a vote, and Horry County wants citizens to be ready for the changes before upcoming November elections.

Starting Tuesday, if a person does not have government-issued photo I.D. then they can get a special-made South Carolina photo voter I.D. card before election time. The card contains the voter's photo next to their voter registration information, such as where they live and what precinct they're in. All registered voters have to do is give the date of birth and the last four digits of their social security number.

The elections office is hosting different events throughout Horry County where people can come and get these cards. The events are being held at local libraries, since most libraries are centrally-located in communities. Horry County Voter Registration Director Sandy Martin says this is the county's way of making this law as convenient as possible for all voters.

"We want to encourage the voters, senior citizens, or people who don't have any of the I.D.'s, to go ahead and get this taken care of before next year," said Martin, "when all the big elections start happening, and have it out of the way that way."

If you already have a South Carolina driver's license, SC DMV identification card, federal military  identification card, SC voter registration card with a photo or a US passport, you do not need to worry. If you go to vote, and don't have a photo ID, you won't be turned away, though. Individuals can sign an affidavit to obtain a photo, whether through religious beliefs, disability, illness, work schedule or lack of transportation.
