MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WMBF) – City officials confirmed all traffic lights at the backgate were completely out Thursday morning due to a light pole on fire at Highway 707 and Coalition.

Our photographer at the scene confirmed that the power to the traffic lights was restored at about 8:10 a.m., but police were still directing the backed-up traffic.

All traffic coming off Highway 707, Socastee Boulevard, was being redirected south onto Highway 17, and all westbound traffic off Farrow Parkway is having to go north, stated David Knipes with the City of Myrtle Beach.

Left turns were not being allowed onto Farrow Parkway from the southbound 17 Bypass. Seven officers were directing traffic at the backgate, and Knipes recommended that drivers avoid the area if possible.

The light at Palmetto Point Boulevard was also out, Knipes stated. He did not have a time frame for when the lights would be up and running again.

Santee Cooper officials confirmed that at the peak of the outage, 3,350 customers in the 17 bypass and Highway 707 area were without power.

South Carolina Highway Patrol reported that the lights were out at US 17 Bypass at Palmetto Pointe Blvd, SC 707 at Socastee HS, and Forestbrook Rd at Dick Pond Rd.
