Ninth grade student has MD aspirations

MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WMBF) - Mia Carroll's day begins at 5 a.m. where she participates with the Conway High School swim team, but her mom drives her 45 minutes through traffic so she can attend the Academy for Arts, Science and Technology in Carolina Forest.

It's all part of her road to success. Carroll is just 14 years old, in the ninth grade and is set on becoming a doctor.

"I really like the fact that I can help others, and I think it's great because women are really under represented in the medical field," says Carroll, who is well on her way to accomplishing her dreams.

She started giving back to the community after her uncle passed away. She has raised more than $10,000 for St. Jude's Hospital through 5k walks with her family.

At school, she is armed with a bag full of books to attend the Academy where she takes her education seriously.

"I have a drama 1,  algebra 1, PE, freshmen seminar, and physical science," she says.

Carroll wants to attend Yale University after High School and is shooting to get all A's this year. Her favorite subjects are math and science. She's also extracurricular interests including the Conway High Swim Team, honor choir, art and church.

"I think if you find something you are interested in after school it really helps you during school because I wasn't really into school in seventh and eighth grade, but then I found the swim team."
