MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WMBF) – A 22-year-old Little River man was arrested for cruelty to children after a trooper found two young children locked in the man's car.

A South Carolina Highway Patrol trooper reported to Myrtle Beach Police that at about 12:35 a.m. on September 2, a man approached his patrol car and told him two young children had been locked in a vehicle for at least 45 minutes with no adults in sight, according to a MBPD report.

The trooper had the older child open the door of the car, which was parked in the Grand Strand Regional Medical Center parking lot. He found they were sweating heavily, and they said they were hungry and thirsty, the report states. About 20 minutes later, a man, later identified as 22-year-old Brandon Goodwin, approached and was detained.

A nurse checked the children and found they were okay. The responding officer spoke to the mother of the children, who was ill and had been admitted to the medical center. Officers explained the situation to her, and she became upset, saying Goodwin was responsible for the children. Security video showed Goodwin entering the hospital just before 11 p.m.

Goodwin was taken to Myrtle Beach jail and has been charged with cruelty to children. The children were released to Goodwin's mother.
