Fake lottery call first of many potential schemes, BBB warns

CONWAY, SC (WMBF) - Winning the MegaMillions lottery and a new car would be a dream come true, right?

But if you're getting a strange phone calling about lottery winnings, and the caller asks you to send them money, it's likely a farce.

"No one will call you," said Cash 'N Dash clerk Kay Boyd. "We don't have that information. Even after the company calls our store to tell us we sold a winning ticket, we still won't know who!"

Conway Police say they've received several calls of concern from Conway residents, saying someone called asking for money to help them receive their lottery win and brand new car.

Lt. Selena Small said, "Citizens are cautioned to be aware of similar scams and reminded to never give out your personal information to anyone soliciting it over the phone."

Better Business Bureau President Kathy Graham confirms this type of fake phone call is nothing new, but warns the number of calls will increase throughout the fall.

"People are already thinking about the holidays," she said. "It sure would be nice to make that mortgage payment or make that car payment. People tend to fall for these things because they want them so bad."
