DILLON COUNTY, SC (WMBF) –Five people were shot Saturday morning at The Legion in Dillon County, in an incident that killed one and hospitalized four, according to Chief Cliff Arnett with the Dillon County Sheriff's Office.
Dillon County Coroner Donnie Grimsley said the man killed is 21-year-old Damien Simpson from Dillon County. Simpson was transported to the hospital where he was pronounced dead. Coroner Grimsley performed the autopsy Saturday afternoon.
Two people are now in custody: Devante McNeil, 21 from Latta, and Benjamin Bethea, 18 from Latta, and Chief Arnett says both men will be charged with murder.
The sheriff's office believes the suspects and victims knew each other before shooting. It appears a fight between the men began inside of the club, became escalated and guns were eventually used. The shooting itself took place outside of the club.
Captain Arnett said the shooting occurred between 2:30 a.m. and 2:45 a.m. Saturday at The Legion, when officers responded to a 911 call of shots fired.
Aside from Simpson, the four others injured in the shooting were taken to the hospital, and Chief Arnett said each of them was shot. As of noon Saturday, Chief Arnett confirmed one of the injured was released from the hospital, one was in critical condition and the other two were stable.
The incident is currently being investigated by the Dillon County Sheriff's Office.
