Carnival helps kick off Friday night football at St. James

MURRELLS INLET, SC (WMBF) - There's always excitement during the first week of school, but for some, it doesn't compare to what happens on Friday night. It's the start of high school football games.

If you're not interested, just wait. St. James High School is starting a movement to get you to come out and take a seat in the stands.

St. James Football Head Coach Mark Fischer says you should now have a place to be every Friday night.

"I think our kids will put on a good show for them," said Fischer. "And if for no other reason they're going to try and work their tails off."

Senior player Tyrell Dukes says the football team doesn't want to explain, they want to show you.

"The Friday night lights - It gives you a feeling I can't even describe," he said.

It's easy to see the competition on the field, but in the Grand Strand, there's competition just to get you in the stands.

"It's still summertime, and people are still going to the beach, so we want to try and get them off the beach and over here to our stadium," said Fischer.

And what's a football game without the fans?

"Nobody wants to walk into an empty stadium," explained Fischer. "Nobody wants to play for some coaches."

Dukes says a full house makes all the difference.

"When I look into the stands, I like people saying, 'Ooohhh and aaahhh,' the crowd cheering, going up and down," Dukes said.

Students and parents are trying to turn Friday night football into its own attraction: a free first football carnival.

The carnival will have "blow ups, hairspray, so many random games that kids can play and enjoy," said Senior Cheerleader Lawson Thompson.

It's a way to get everyone's attention, and the community more involved and in those stands.

"They have to be excited. They have to be as hyped as we are," Dukes said.

The students, teachers and parents want to make the carnival a tradition for the first home football game every year. The free carnival starts at the St. James stadium Friday night from 5:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Just in time for the game's kick-off at 7:30 p.m.
