Teaching initiative selects Whittemore Park Middle

Posted: Updated:

In May the SC Council on Competitiveness unveiled TranformSC, an initiative to transform public education in South Carolina. As a part of this initiative, pilot sites across the state in which innovative educators are already engaged in developing and implementing transformative change were identified. These pilot sites will be supported by TranformSC through research and development in new assessments, policy support to allow for new approaches, and the sharing of best practices from across the state and the nation. We are excited to announce that Whittemore Park Middle School has been selected as a pilot site for this state innovation initiative.

On Tuesday, August 20th, Moryah Jackson and Dr. Gerrita Postlewait from New Carolina's Transform SC provided an overview of the initiative to Whittemore Park Middle School administration and faculty, local legislative delegation members, community and business leaders, City and County Council members, higher education partners from Coastal Carolina University and Horry Georgetown Technical College, Horry County Board of Education members, and district staff members. Principal Judy Beard shared the school's goals and approach, and faculty and community members shared their ideas and vision for transforming public education. Superintendent Cindy Elsberry provided information about the district's personalized digital learning initiative, and Cindy Ambrose, Chief Academic Officer, talked about policies and changes which would help support 21st century teaching and learning. Whittemore Park Middle School staff will join with staff from other pilot sites across the state at an education summit in Columbia in September to move forward in this initiative to transform public education throughout South Carolina.
