Auditor's Office cracks down on out-of-state tags

HORRY COUNTY, SC (WMBF) - The Horry County Auditor's Office will be cracking down on parents with out-of-state license plates as they're dropping off kids at school.

Investigators with the Horry County Auditor's Office will be patrolling school parking lots looking for out of state plates. Anyone living in Horry County and sending their children to public schools should be paying local property taxes on their vehicles.

Most of the property taxes collected go to the school district, so not having the correct tags is really costing your child's school.

When you move to South Carolina you have 45 days to switch your tags and pay up. If you're caught with an out of state tag, the office will first send you a warning letter then a warrant notice.

They say it's important to report an out-of-state plate when you see one.
