HGTC responds to job demand, adds new degree options

CONWAY, SC (WMBF) – Soon, students in the Grand Strand will have brand new options when it comes to picking a college major. Horry Georgetown Technical College (HGTC)  is getting ready to roll out three new degrees that will train students for manufacturing jobs.

The Robotics Technology Certificate Degree will be a nine-month program where students will learn the ins and out of robots used in a the manufacturing world. It will take students two years to complete the Machine Tool Technology or Machine Tool Operations degrees. These programs will train students to become skilled machinists.

HGTC actually used to offer the Machine Tool degrees, however, the college dropped the programs about 10 years ago because the jobs opportunities just weren't there. Marilyn Fore, Senior Vice President for HGTC, says that's changed.  After surveying local companies,  the college found knowledge in robotics and machining are in high demand.

"We're back into that business and we want to be prepared not only to fill the positions that are open now, but also any of the companies that are looking to come here. We won't have to skip a beat when we say we will have machinists ready for you to hire,"explained Fore.

Brad Lofton with the Myrtle Beach Regional Economic Development Corporation says having a skilled work force is a critical factor in recruiting companies to the area.

"No one is going to come down here and invest millions of dollars in a new facility if they can't be convinced they will have a trained readily-accessible work force," added Lofton.

HGTC recently got the approval from the college's commission and the next step is to get approval from the state. The robotics program is set to launch in spring of 2014. The other two machine tool degree programs will start in the fall of 2014.
