HCPD plans to implement Nixle alert system

HORRY COUNTY, SC (WMBF) - Two men are still on the run as of Thursday evening after an armed robbery and shooting in Carolina Forest Wednesday night. Horry County Police used a reverse 9-1-1 call, also called a "geoalert" to alert homeowners to the danger Wednesday night.

"The reason we sent out the Geoalert last night was because we had two suspects believed to be armed within residential areas and we felt we needed to alert as many people as possible," Horry County Lieutenant Robert Kegler said.

Lt. Kegler said the Geoalert system is not used often, but was used Wednesday because officers were using bloodhound dogs in a heavy residential area.

Why not let people know that we're in their area and that there's potential for danger outside and to stay inside and be safe.," Lt. Kegler said.

But, not everyone got the alert because it only is able to reach land line phones. But, Horry County Police are moving forward and plan to soon implement the Nixle alert system.

"We are working with the Fire Department. The Fire Department has the Nixle system,  and we have recently made arrangements to jump on board with them and are in the process of getting things all set up so that we can get the word out and get people signed up to get law enforcement alerts as well," Lt. Kegler said.

The police department didn't rely solely on a Geoalert Wednesday night. Messages were also posted to Twitter and Facebook to let people know what was going on.

"When I put on the post, essentially what went out on the Geoalert, on the end of the post, I said please share to get the word out," Lt. Kegler said.

More than 700 people shared the police department's post about the search for the wanted suspects. According to Facebook, that post alone reached more than 56,000  people.

"The word got out. Social media plays a huge role in what we do," Lt. Kegler said.
