Ready to take a ride on the BBQ trail?

MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WMBF) - Walk into any Myrtle Beach barbecue restaurant around noon on a week day and you're going to see a very diverse crowd. Inside you'll find everyone from those trying to grab a quick bite on their lunch break to retirees enjoying the atmosphere and food.

Come September those local barbecue joints could have even more people because the state is looking to advertise restaurants all over and here in the Grand Strand.

The State Department of Parks, Recreation and Tourism has more than 20 million dollars in its budget over the next two years. A portion of that money will go to the barbeque trail.

The barbecue trail let's people know where to grab those specialty items like pulled pork, brisket, and ribs all throughout the state.

Leaders with the Myrtle Beach Area Chamber of Commerce said they do not know if they will actually see any direct money from the state to use for the barbecue trail, but they'll be collaborating with the state advertising campaign.

The Marketing Director with the Chamber Susan Phillips explains, "this is going to be good for us, because we will be able to piggy back on their efforts and amplify everything we're doing. We have ongoing marketing to get folks here this will give us a little more of a lift."

Phillips said the Chamber is also going to see some added advertising from state when it comes to letting more people know about the 8th Annual Beach Boogie and BBQ Festival.

It's a three day evening starting on August 30 at Market Common.

Barbecue fan like Robert McCord of Myrtle Beach thinks the idea is a good one, "I've been here all my life and have had a chance to experience barbecue from all over. Almost every county has good barbecue, but a lot of it is not known about so awareness needs to happen."
