Better Business Bureau deals with rising number of complaints

MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WMBF) - The Better Business Bureau in the Grand Strand reports more complaints on businesses this year than in 2012.

So far, the BBB has closed more than 2,000 complaints against local businesses. Five hundred more complaints are still waiting to be verified.

With the amount of complaints piling up, we decided to see what type of business is giving people the biggest headache. The Myrtle Beach Area Better Business Bureau says the number one business complaint in the Grand Strand and Pee Dee has to do with the auto industry. That refers to all things auto-- from repairs to sales.

Kathy Graham, with the BBB, says it's because there are so many ways for you to get trapped.

"It's the wild wild west here," said Graham. "The auto title loans, you have all these different things out there. And there's so many different lots."

Next on the list are hotels, retail, and vacation rentals. Experts say that's why knowing the top areas for trouble are very important, so you know what you're dealing with.

"It's always good to see what people are complaining about," said Graham. "What the scamming businesses there are that are out there at the time."

The areas that are home to the most business complaints are Horry County and Marion County.
