MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WMBF) – A man arrested early Monday morning is accused of burglary after he allegedly broke into an apartment unit on 26th Ave North, then claimed he was working for the city, according to a Myrtle Beach Police Department report.

Louis Paul Carpenter, 38-years-of-age from Conway is the accused. Police said they went towards an apartment unit after being dispatched to a burglary in progress call for apartment B in the complex. They noticed broken glass at the front door of apartment C, and the door to apartment B open.

Police announced themselves and after a few moments Carpenter came out from hiding inside the apartment, at which point he was detained.

A witness said that around 1:30 a.m. Monday morning, water started leaking from apartment B into her apartment. She went outside and said all of the windows to the apartment were open, and the lights were on. The apartment owner, who was not present, was called and verified that Carpenter didn't have permission to be inside his apartment, and he did not know Carpenter.

The witness said she saw two males upstairs and heard broken glass so she called the police. While she was on the phone, Carpenter approached her with a hammer in his hand, telling her he worked for the city, though he could not tell her for whom.

Another witness said he heard movement, broken glass, talking and the sound of someone slamming the door. He also called the police. This witness said he saw Carpenter walk down the stairs and talk to the first witness, and that he claimed to be working on the electrical and plumbing in apartment B.

Carpenter was arrested  and transported to the Myrtle Beach Jail.
