Teacher academy helps prepare educators

Posted: Updated:

MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WMBF) - Horry County educators are attending a two day academy at the Academy for Arts Science and Technology.

It's a highly recommended orientation-like program for all new teachers in the district. Horry County says it hired about 200 new teachers, and Monday and Tuesday they will be getting acquainted with what to expect.

The academy goes over everything from district expectations, tips for educators, do's and don't's of social media and sessions with curriculum specialists so teachers can stay on task during the year.

All new teachers are also given a mentor for the year to help with ongoing issues. One new teacher says she's excited to be the best 3rd grade teacher at Myrtle Beach Elementary that she can be.

"I really want to be that support system," says Katie Reddington, a CCU grad. "If they don't have it at home, I want to make a difference, be that one teacher they remember for the rest of their lives."
