Robeson County house fire kills two, officials say

ROBESON COUNTY, NC (WMBF) – Two people died in a structure fire in the Red Springs community of Robeson County off Highway 71 Saturday night, according to Stephanie Chavis, Fire Inspector with Robeson County Emergency Services Fire Marshal and Emergency Management.

Inspector Chavis said they received a call around 11:30 p.m., and after arriving on scene, firemen advised there were two fatalities, a man and a woman.

Investigators say the deceased woman, believed to be 70-years-of-age, had been having car trouble, and they expect the fire began from her car catching fire in the enclosed single-car garage. From there, the fire burned into the attic of the home.

From what investigators can tell, it appears both of the deceased were killed by smoke inhalation, but an autopsy will be performed to confirm the cause of death. At this time, there is no reason to suspect foul play.

There was very little fire damage to the inside of the house, most of the damage was caused by heat and smoke.
