The new Moore Middle School Opens in Florence

Posted: Updated:

FLORENCE, SOUTH CAROLINA( WMBF) - Florence School District One unveils the new Moore Middle School this year.

Students and faculty cut the ribbon at the opening of the brand new Moore Middle School. The new building is located right off of Hoffmeyer Road.

School officials said this new, nearly 16,000 square foot space is a moment in history.

"It's like going from rags to riches," said Principal Carol Schweitz. "Our classrooms were not in good shape, we had leaky ceilings, the desks were falling apart."

It was for those reasons Florence School District One decided to build this brand new state of the art facility.

"If you don't update yourself with technology you are going to be left behind," said Lee Price, a teacher's assistant. Price will use some of the technological advances the new facility has to offer.

A production studio for a student-run news cast, six computer labs and eight science labs are just some of the cutting edge advances teachers will use to educate the 6th, 7th and 8th graders that will stream into this new facility.

"We have Ipads and Ipods, Apple TVs, smart TV's so we are very excited to start this school year," said Schweitz.

In just a few weeks, more than 800 students will be housed in the new building equipped to handle 1200 students. The cafeteria is one of the largest in Florence, coming in at around 6,000 square feet. The school also has four exterior basketball courts and one football field.

School administrators say the new facility not only created a buzz in the community but, also among the students.

"I think they'll be more excited with the new building and it will give them that umpf to be excited about learning and be excited about coming to school," continued Price.

Florence School District paid for the school using a pay-as-you-go program. The price tag on the new facility came in around $20 million.
